Mom2Mom Africa:Providing Education- and Hope- for a Brighter Future to Children and Young Women in Rural Tanzania

In North America we are so fortunate for all of the things we have. Primary among these luxuries, is education. Empowering young minds to engage in discovery and lifelong learning is the cornerstone of a healthy and prosperous society. Once in awhile, we may get a glimpse of the reality of life for people in other parts of the world. Having to contend with the more pressing basics such as feeding their families, many parents must forego educating their children. It is heartbreaking to know that millions of kids all over the world will never have the privilege of receiving an education. Although we wish to change the dire circumstances faced by the needy; the myriad charitable organizations available can confound even the most heartfelt intentions.  We want to ensure that our contributions are put to the best possible effect.

If you’ve ever wanted to help in a real way and make a tremendous difference in the lives of children with a minimal effort, then look no further. Cambridge, Ontario mom Alison Fraser has started an organization called Mom2Mom Africa (http://www.mom2momafrica.ca/index.html) . The purpose of this wonderful initiative is to support the education of children and young women in rural Tanzania.

Alison has been organizing various fundraisers to help kids in need in rural Tanzania since 2006.  She has sent books, knapsacks, school supplies, and clothing to her friends who volunteer at the Shinda Basic School in Arusha; and to other schools in Tanzania as well. Rob Chekwaze, an ecotourism guide and friend, serves as Alison’s eyes and ears in the region. He helps by identifying children in need and putting them in touch with Mom2Mom Africa. In this way, Alison is provided with first hand information about which children and schools to choose.  The need is always greater than the funds available; and Alison describes the experience of having to meet these demands as “heartbreaking and heart-warming at the same time”.  Children sponsored through Mom2Mom Africa will receive help with tuition and school uniform fees; and they will receive one meal per day at the school.  Most importantly, they will have hope for a much happier future.

There are a couple of easy ways you can become involved. Visit the website (http://www.mom2momafrica.ca/index.html) and read stories about some of these amazing kids.  Look at the smiles on their faces as they proudly sport their school uniforms; and decide to make a difference by sending a child to school.

In addition, you can vote with a click of a button- Alison’s project is the only Canadian organization to be chosen to participate in the Kindermusik Good Beginnings Grant program ( http://www.kindermusik.com/legacy/grants/ ). The top five ideas will each receive $1,000 USD.  That will be enough to send three kids to school in Tanzania! Until February 9th 2011, you can vote up to 10 times per 24 hour period.   Please spread the word about this wonderful project to all of your friends…the big challenge now is to build awareness and let people know about the contest and to vote regularly. Through Mom2Mom Africa, we can turn our heartfelt intentions into reality by empowering young women and children through education!
